State Officials Accuse Lawmaker of Making Racist Remarks

State officials are accusing a lawmaker of making racist remarks. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the state Department of Land and Natural Resources complained yesterday about the behavior of state Representative Faye Hanohano, calling it "abusive in authority, racially discriminatory and inappropriate." The department’s director, William Aila, Jr., sent a letter to state House Speaker Joseph Souki detailing several incidents that accused Hanohano of making disparaging comments toward staff at committee hearings. She allegedly said land was stolen from many Hawaiians, implying that a department staffer was responsible.
